A day in the life...

  • Graeme Legal Director

Today I was asked to write 150 words on a typical day as a Director at Z group. My first thought was “where do I start?” immediately followed by “I need more words”. Both thoughts are interlinked because the words “typical” and “Z group” cannot be joined together. Z group is certainly not your typical firm and no day here at Z group is the same as any other. I sought refuge in a random Time Sheet from before Christmas and found that I went from discussing enquiries on a commercial Lease Assignment with a client to problems with a party wall injunction, reading a client’s survey report on the purchase of a Mill House to advising a client on leaving property to his family. In between were discussions with my staff on current conveyancing issues, preparing a particularly complex Will for a client and somehow managing to fit in Christmas lunch with a retiring member of staff. Thinking, perhaps my random time sheet was atypical I thought of other days and realized every day was different. My partner asked me this morning, “What do you have going on at work today” I told her truthfully that whatever I may expect of the day at 9.00am I was sure that by the time it came to 6.00 pm it would have been very different and the time would have flown past. Z group deal with every aspect of our client’s lives from buying properties to making Wills, preparing tax returns to advice on business planning and we never know what the next telephone call or the next e-mail will bring our way. We have responsibility for making sure our clients understand the options they have available and make the most of those choices, which in itself is highly rewarding. Seeing our staff developing their skills and knowledge base makes every day, no matter how stressful that day might be, compelling.

  • Sam Client Relationship Manager

The role of client relationship manager is important in any business, particularly so in a fast moving Practise such as ours. A typical morning may consist of attending an AML (anti-money laundering) seminar, followed by client meetings in order to familiarize myself with and identify their individual needs. Meetings can take place at a local boutique coffee house, in the boardroom at our Wimbledon base or at a local golf or tennis club. Following up on client feedback by phone, email and in person is frequent, providing assistance and information that keeps our group abreast of change in our constantly evolving landscape. My role means I get involved in a wide variety of tasks, from organizing a weekly delivery of organic fruit for our team, to managing and coordinating projects such as upgrading and updating our website to match the ever-changing needs and nature of our business. A day in the life at Z group never fails to provide diversity and interest.

  • Elaine Trainee Accountant

There is no typical day at Z group. Every day is a learning day and the staff here take full advantage of opportunities to experience something new and take on added responsibilities. With our diverse range of clients I have the opportunity to learn about how various business models and industries are treated differently when preparing accounts and calculating tax. Preparing Management Accounts has given me the chance to learn about the day to day running of a business and earlier this year I was seconded to a West End based Brand Design Agency client. It was an amazing opportunity to work independently and see how the work I do affects their decision making. As we have such a positive working relationship with our clients I have always felt very welcome in their offices, but it’s great to come back to the Z group family, where collaboration is a way of life, not just a guiding principle as one of our core values. Particularly in the run up to deadlines I can rely on everyone to work together to get returns submitted on time. Whether that’s quarterly VAT returns or yearly personal tax. January is a particularly busy time for Accountants and an opportunity for me to learn from the Senior Managers in the firm, assisting with tax returns and rental accounts. It’s not all preparing accounts and submitting returns though, we’ve also been known to go for an evening of rock climbing or bowling!

  • Andy Head of HR

There are no typical days in Z group for me which is why I really love working here. The organization is relatively new – so many things need doing when you are in a start-up situation. This could be writing a new policy or answering a client enquiry, deciding if sickness should be paid, looking for a new qualified accountant, training someone in a new skill, or something completely unrelated. Part of the attraction is just mucking in to whatever needs to be done. The business is growing fast and this is great but brings its own problems to solve – new people to integrate and train into the Z group culture and understand new roles, new people to manage them. This means we are very familiar with the issues when it comes to getting a business started. Every decision seems to fall on the owner – which is where we can help. We can also help more experienced businesses with day to day issues, our advice comes from a hands on experience of what works and not theoretical models.
